To carry out the RC&D program, diverse groups of local volunteers, agencies of government, private individuals, groups and businesses, and philanthropic/nonprofit entities are brought together in unique partnerships to find solutions to community and natural resource problems.
Local RC&D councils provide opportunities for all partners to be more innovative and creative in funding projects. Grants, donations and contributions can be given to the council and are tax deductible. The council then can help with local community needs.
Some projects that have been sponsored in the past include Highway 12 All American Road, Highway 143 byway designation, Regional Fire Planning and Cooperative Weed Management Areas.
THE ORGANIZATION RC&D is truly a local program because of the responsibility placed on the local people, through the RC&D Council. The Council is the local governing body, consisting of individuals and sponsors. The sponsors of the Color Country RC&D are the seven Soil Conservation Districts (SCD), five counties and thirty-five cities and towns within the five county area. Representatives from each area are selected to serve on the RC&D Council according to the bylaws of the Council. They must develop plans to solve local problems or meet local needs and carry out the actions within those plans. They insure public participation and keep others informed of activities and opportunities.
Who knows better what the local issues and needs are than the local leaders such as county commissioners, mayors, conservation district supervisors, business leaders and local individuals? This local tie of issues and people, accountable to their neighbors, friends and resources, is the key that insures high priority work is accomplished.
